groovey moves

I am amazed at the amount of groovey artistic minded shops there are out there.

There is something amazing about making something unique, and it’s just as much fun to look at other peoples’ stuff.

These are a few that I’ve come across that appeal to my sense of humour. They are by no means the only ones out there, and most of these shops have blogs which have links to other cool places to shop. So you sould literally spend an entire week exploring and still not find them all.

Or you could also just keep going back to the same ones and gazing every day like I am!

my way history

blog-neckalce-bronzeWEB.jpg

I started making jewellery to sell under the name My Way Or The Highway around seven years ago. This was before children, and during a career, so it was always a partime thing. All my friends received jewellery for their birthday, I sold it at work and I fullfilled individual orders.

I had loads of creative outlets, so it remained very casual until after I had my beautiful kids.

Then it became almost essential to be able to be artistic and to create something. I often used it as retail therapy without the retail bit (why spend loads of money when you can MAKE yourself something!). And to unwind after a whirlwind day (I tend to watch very little TV).

My materials have evolved over the years. I find that when I see someone else making things similar to mine I change what I am doing.

Having said that, I have also found myself being totally inspired by what other people are making and have often used the same materials or colours.

I haven’t been restricted to jewels. I have made felt brooches, retro fabric hand bags…and…ok…jewellery.

blog buttons small.jpg Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, button jewellery. Materials have included (but not exclusive to), black wire, czech beads, fire poilshed beads, chain of all description, ribbon, buttons and pressed glass.

Inspiration is always an elusive thing, but the most inpsired I get is when I have run out of materials to use.

blog-earrings-red-crop-WEB.jpgMy black wire earrings and pendants, which have by far been my biggest seller over the years, came about as I was trying to make earrings to wear to a ball one year. I did not have a single bead, only black plastic covered wire.

The antique copper necklace (at the top of post) is a present for a special girlfriend, and once again, I didn’t have the beads I wanted (only chain) in the middle of the night…so the simplistic design was born.

My jewellery making has become something that I can do very quickly, so it’s instant gratification for me. An important thing in my life right now, as time to leisurely sit at my desk for hours is impossible with two small children.

And finding that thing that makes me feel good is as necessary as food and water.

carrot walnut & cinnamon cake

blog-carrotcakeWEB.jpg

I have been looking for years for that elusive cafe style carrot and walnut cake recipe. You know the one, really dark, not too sweet, with that fantastic icing on top!

I found it.

And I believe it is my civic duty to blog it.

toilet competition

blog-davisWEB.jpg

Offspring #1, age five, has a slight competetive edge to his behaviour. Recently, this has been manifesting itself in ‘who gets to the toilet first at bedtime’.

Our evening routine starts with dinner, then brushing of teeth, reading of book, going to the toilet, and then being tucked into bed. It has been this for four years (took us a year in the beginning to work out you needed routine at bedtime). There has never been a race to the toilet, until recently.

And watch out if the three year old gets there first! There’s yelling and crying and ‘the whole world is going to end’ talk from #1.

So, I had a breakthrough tonight.

After book, I asked #1 if he would like to go to the toilet (#2 doesn’t care when she goes), he replied ‘No.” So I sent #2 off, and that prompted not only yelling and crying from #1, but also anger directed at me.

This continued for quite a few minutes. No use in trying to stop him too soon (a bit like trying to stop a bull from charging the red flag). When the bull had at least slowed down a bit, I asked him to sit next to me and talk about why he was angry with me.

#1, while crying, “You let LL go to the toilet first”

Mum, “I didn’t honey, I asked you first…are you angry at me?”

#1, “I wanted to go first… yes I’m angry at you!”

Mum, “Are you sure you’re angry at me? I did the right thing, I was being a good mummy by asking you first. Are you sure you’re not upset with yourself for not going when I asked?”

Silence. Sob. Sniff.

#1, “Yeah, I think I am upset with myself”

Mum, “Was that nice to get angry with me? Do you need to say sorry?”

#1, “Sorry Mum.”

Hugs all round. Deep breathe, he’s ok.

But then the weirdest thing. The crying and sobbing started all over again. I tucked him into bed, gave him a kiss…still sobbing…still ranting. I left him alone for about two minutes…still sobbing…still ranting. Then I went into his room and asked if he would like me to rub his back.

The sobbing stopped.

I asked, “Does it all just get a bit too much sometimes?”

And the perfectly sane and calm response, “Yes Mum.”

So the breakthrough was a reminder to myself what it must be like as a five year old. (And also a five year old with Verbal and Physical Developmental Dyspraxia). Every day is a challenge. Your body, hormones and brain are changing every day. You have to contend with what we think is a normal day (getting ready, going to school, interacting with people), but the reality is that it’s not normal for him yet.

He’s only been at it for five years.

So really, it’s not about the toilet at all.

this rice, is a rock

blog-leiaWEB.jpg

Dinner this evening…

LL, age 3 (while looking at rice on table)…

‘This rice is a rock’

Pushes rice to other side of table…

‘Rice, this is rock’

Mum…

‘Are you hungry LL? Are you going to eat your rice? (knowing full well that the curry and yoghurt also on plate was NEVER going to be even looked at)

LL (while ignoring idiotic question and gazing lovingly at rice)…

‘Rock, rocka rock, rock, rock, rock…’

This continued from the 3 year old, until mummy cleared the table…

LL…

‘I want my rice!!’

Mum…

‘What rice? There are only rocks’

Ahhh…and who said parenting wasn’t fun?

firepolished & addiction

blog-red-necklace-3WEB.jpg

My latest creation under the label My Way Or The Highway.

I seem to have a ‘thing’ about Fire polished Crystal at the moment. When I see it, thoughts of ownership are too strong to deny! Then I must make something. Anything! I spent hours holding the heavy red beads in my hands, looking at them in different light.

Is the process of making something beautiful better than the actual end result?

Well illustrated by the fact that this piece is destined to belong to someone else as of tomorrow…and I’m not having heart palpatations.

venessa’s orange cake

venessas-orange-cakeWEB2.jpg

I know a super cool girl named Venessa. Who for years, has managed to make this totally amazing Orange Cake.

I have made this cake several times myself and it is Jester proof.

Yes, I love cooking! And yes, I have been known to bake something just to take it’s photo, and not eat it.

I have been given permission to publish the mouthwatering recipe…

hello world!

black onyx necklace

Welcome to my first post! To my world of jewellery, family, and life.

This unique necklace is made from black Onyx and fire polished crystals on an antique chain. It was created under the label ‘my way or the highway’.

It is currently my favourite piece of jewellery…however, I am fickle with such things and promise to post all things sparkly and beautiful.
